Wallace Mercer: a great Chairman of Hearts. #SPFL #ScottishFootball #Hearts

Wallace Mercer almost changed the history of Scottish football when he was the Hearts Chairman.

In 1986, the club was 8 minutes away from continuing the resurgence of competition in the top league, a resurgence started by Ferguson’s brilliant Aberdeen team.

Sadly, it did not happen – and 35 seasons of miserable two-club domination has followed.

I did not agree with Mercer’s proposed Hearts/Hibs merger – but it made good business sense at the time and there was no shame in proposing the change.

Hearts and Hibs have now been dismal failures for an aggregate 130 years. There should be no pride in independence that has delivered no success.

It is quite possible that Hearts or Hibs will achieve a historic win in the Scottish Premiership this season. Either club winning would be brilliant for Scottish football.

However, even if the league flag is flying in Edinburgh in 2022, off-the-pitch changes will still be needed to make the Scottish Premiership permanently more competitive.

Time for Change.
