Old Firm Transfer Ban?

Radical changes are needed to make the Scottish Premiership more competitive.

Try this one for size.

Ban the transfer of any player from any other Premiership club to the Old Firm for 5 years, starting in 2021/22.

The antics of Celtic and Rangers in the transfer market have destabilised their erstwhile competitors for decades.

Examples are all to easy to find.

A few seasons ago, Dundee United were looking quite decent, threatening to win a couple of cups.

What happened?

Celtic bought four of their players in the January transfer window, perhaps helped by the fact that the Dundee United manager at the time was an ex-Celtic player.

That was the end of Dundee United’s challenge for the cups.

More recently, Hearts were doing pretty well at the start of one season.

What happened?

Rangers stepped in to destabilise Kyle Lafferty, who was doing well for Hearts at the time.

Rangers got their man – and Hearts lost their way.

Then there’s the saga of Scott Allan, a fine young player at Hibs.

Allan became the subject of a transfer tug of war between Celtic and Rangers. He eventually signed for Celtic, who then barely played him.

A career wrecked, one of many that have been damaged by the cheque books of the Glasgow Twins.

A five year ban wouldn’t mean players couldn’t move. They could be sold to England and elsewhere, where the transfer fees will be higher anyway.

The utter domination of Scottish football by two clubs MUST be ended.

Time for Change.
