Hearts have a window of opportunity now to leave the Also Rans behind and, over the next two or three seasons, to build towards bringing the Premiership flag back to Edinburgh.
Ultimately, of course, Scottish football requires at least one or two other clubs to emerge from the pack to start to try to match Celtic and Rangers on the pitch.
However, Hearts ownership structure, astute board and business management, excellent team management and supporter base now put Hearts in a unique position to lead the way towards ending the duopoly.
Let’s be clear.
It will require a near-miracle to topple Celtic and Rangers.
The 37 season gap since any other club has done so tells you all you need to know about the level of difficulty involved.
The first objective is to split them, so that Hearts earn a Champions League qualification slot. The funding from such success can be crucial to ultimately sinking the Clyde-based giants.
There will be bumps along the way. Hearts are not always going to beat the Also Rans or be pleasing on the eye.
However, I have been confident of Robbie Neilson’s ability from his first season as Hearts manager – and that confidence has grown over the years.
With the financial backing of the Foundation, funds from benefactors and revenue from Europe, Robbie and Joe Savage have a chance of building the player pool necessary to ultimately knock Celtic and Ranger off their perch.
Near-miracles DO happen in football.
Scottish football badly needs another one from Robbie and his players.
Edinburgh Expects – BUT will give Robbie the time he needs.
Time for Change.
