Hearts went through one third of the Scottish Premiership programme unbeaten, having played every other team in the league.
But there were too many draws.
Since that good run, though Hearts remain third, they have fallen dramatically out of touch with Celtic and Rangers. They are now at risk of not even holding on to their current position.
In short, Hearts have gone back to being Also Rans, one of the ten other clubs with no hope of challenging the Old Firm.
The Also Rans can beat each other, but not Celtic and Rangers.
I don’t blame Hearts – or, indeed, any of the other clubs. Their lack of financial strength means they cannot afford transfer fees or high wages.
Competing with Celtic or Rangers for players is impossible.
The financial domination of the Glasgow duopoly is unchallengeable on the pitch.
Soon it will be 38 seasons with only two names on the Premiership trophy.
As I have noted before, it cannot be allowed reach 40.
In the next 12 months, I will be exploring all routes to challenge the duopoly off the field of play.
