Martin Boyle is a VERY good player.
He is under contract, so technically Hibs do not have to agree to sell him.
But, in the real world, the player has had his head turned by the £20,000 a week salary he is being offered. He wants the money, which is far more than the Scottish club can afford to pay him.
However, the really big issue here is the transfer fee.
In the end, Hibs have been able to get £3 million for their best player.
Peanuts, by comparison to, for example, the £10 million plus Rangers have just received for one of their players from an English club.
Peanuts, by comparison to, for example, the £10 million plus each Celtic received for two of their players from English clubs in 2021.
So Celtic and Rangers – the Old Firm – can get £10 million plus BUT no other Scottish club ever gets more than £3 million.
Why?
Because that’s all the Old Firm will ever pay for a player from another Scottish club.
The last player to command a few of more than £3 million when with a non-Old Firm club was Craig Gordon – and that was 15 YEARS AGO.
The control Rangers and Celtic – the duopoly – exert over Scottish football is a complete and utter disgrace – and, moreover, almost certainly illegal.
Elsewhere on this site, you will find changes Scottish Football Matters has suggested need to be made to the financial arrangements that currently exist in Scottish football.
Celtic and Rangers can either agree to changes on a voluntary basis – or be forced to do so by the Scottish Courts.
Their choice.
One way or another, the duopoly WILL be broken by 2025.
Time for Change.
