Hearts have put together a very good squad.
This season, that squad has had sufficient quality to create the impression that there is more to come.
One or two new signings in the current window, followed by perhaps another couple in the Summer,will set Hearts up to make a real challenge to Celtic and Rangers next season.
After 37 seasons of a two-horse race, a Hearts challenge would inject new life into the Premiership.
It will be a great pity to lose John Souttar – but he can be replaced.
It will still require a near miracle for Hearts to win Scotlands top league. However, being able to write “near” into the script is a huge improvement – and there is a genuine and strengthening belief in Edinburgh that a challenge can be mounted.
It is 61 years since Hearts last climbed to the peak of Scottish football.
Now is the time to conquer that Everest again.
