Winning cups does not take a club nearer to winning the Premiership title.
A quick look at St Johnstone confirms this simple truth.
This club has NEVER won the top league in Scotland – or even been close to doing so.
Last season, they won both the Scottish Cup and League Cup.
This season, they seem likely to be relegated.
Their “triumph” seem like a distant memory – but since the cups are all the club could ever aspire to win, they have indeed climbed their Everest.
Well done to them.
However, Hearts and Hibs must be better than that.
Nothing matters now but winning the Premiership crown.
The consolation prizes are of no consolation any longer.
Hibs haven’t won the top league for 70 years. Hearts have a record of 60 years of failure.

Meantime, the managers of Hearts and Hibs must make clear the Premiership crown is their target.
Time to stop aiming for cups.
