What Douglas Park really wants is more respect for Rangers and, by implication, Celtic.
In other words, he wants the Rangers and Celtic duopoly, which has squeezed the life out of Scottish football for four decades, to continue.
When Park speaks about the Premiership being undervalued commercially, he means the two clubs dominating it don’t get enough funding. In truth, his own club has overspent, running up losses of over £20 million last season, despite winning the top league. He simply must find more revenue, to repair the damage to his own clubs finances – and to help shore up the Glasgow duopoly.
Meantime, in the world where people care about the future of Scottish football, not just the fate of the two Glasgow Giants, Deloitte are doing work for five clubs, work that is focused on increasing the revenue of Scottish football.
Deloittes work is vital BUT the danger is that most of any new money raised simply strengthens the Glasgow duopoly – which is in fact the outcome Douglas Park is seeking.
Nothing is more important currently than restoring genuine competition to the Scottish Premiership.
To achieve that vital objective, more funding needs to be channeled to the other ten clubs in the Premiership. They must be able to afford to develop and retain squads of the quality that makes at least some of them viable contenders for the league title.
The additional funding for the current Also Rans can come from a different sharing of existing revenue or from new revenue – or a mixture of both.
By the end of today, less than one third of the way through the season, there will be only one credible challenger left to Rangers and Celtic; Hearts or Dundee United.
That is pitiful – and a disgrace.
So, Mr Park, there can be no respect for the status quo – and no contemplation of the destructive duopoly being sustained or strengthened.
NOW, in 2021, the process of radical change must start in Scottish football.
If Deloittes work can kick-start the process, it would be excellent – BUT, one way or another, the duopoly MUST be ended.
Time for Change.
