However, an unbeaten start in the league has given supporters some hope that a miracle might indeed be achievable.
Hearts next match is at home against Motherwell – and has “must win” status.
If Hearts can go to Ibrox after the international break no more than one point behind Rangers at the top, that match becomes something of a “free shot”.
Winning at Ibrox is not essential for Hearts challenge to be credible. Winning all home matches against Celtic and Rangers IS essential.
Hibs have a similar challenge. They need to win home matches against the Old Firm –and win virtually every match home and away against the rest of the Also Rans.
There is no doubt Rangers and Celtic are weaker this season than for many years.
There IS genuine hope for Hearts and Hibs.
They must seize the opportunity, for the sake of Scottish football as a whole.
