I have noted before that it is almost impossible for Celtic and Rangers to be toppled in the Scottish Premiership.
36 years of only two names appearing on the Premiership trophy demonstrates just how difficult it is to disrupt the Glasgow duopoly.
Action is needed off the pitch. Perhaps the current 5-club sponsored review is the first small step towards addressing the ills of the Scottish game.
That said, it has been clear for a number of weeks that both Celtic and Rangers are below the standards of last season – in the case of Rangers – and the previous nine seasons as far as Celtic are concerned.
True, Rangers lead the league – but only by one point. Celtic, meantime, have already lost three league matches. Even at this early stage, that looks like a potentially fatal blow to their title ambitions.
Aberdeen look to be as consistently inconsistent as ever, so it appears it will be left to Hearts and Hibs to lead the challenge to the almost invincible duopoly.
The two senior Edinburgh clubs MUST rise to the occasion.
There MUST be an enduring challenge to the Glasgow giants this season, right to the end.
New champions are required.
