Survival has been achieved – but that must only be the start for Hearts.
It is shameful – a disgrace – that only two names have appeared as Premiership Champions since 1985. Nearly four decades of dismal failure.
No other league in Europe has been dominated in this fashion. Even Portugal has had four champions – and several other countries have had ten winners.
In all probability, the answers to this problem cannot be found on the pitch. There are structural issues which make challenging Celtic and Rangers on the pitch almost impossible – that’s why they have been allowed to strangle the life out of Scotland’s National Sport for 36 awful years.
The Directors of Hearts need to garner support from other clubs to challenge the duopoly off the pitch. Celtic and Rangers must be given ultimatums concerning their membership of the SPFL – and if they do not agree with the new arrangements, they are free to leave.
Meantime, on the pitch, the brave management and players of the Also Rans keep trying to beat Glasgow opponents with almost insurmountable advantages.
It appears Celtic and Rangers are weaker this season. They are losing matches. There is a hint of optimism, particularly for Hearts and Hibs.
Many are hoping against hope that this can be the breakthrough year, the year when new Champions are at the pinnacle of the Premiership come the end of the season.
It would be WONDERFUL.
However, we cannot assume that outcome, an outcome we have not seen for so many years.
The Dithering Directors of the Also Rans MUST start preparing the off-the-pitch challenge to the duopoly now. In 2021.
We cannot rely on Robbie, Jack or Stephen, the courageous managers of Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen to save Scottish football.
The Club Directors MUST act.
