Why don’t Celtic run a revolutionary trial of having manager Ange Postecoglou conduct all his work from Japan by Zoom?
Zoom would probably sponsor such a trial to the tune of £ millions, which would help pay shareholder dividends in what is likely to be a low-level season for other revenues.
Celtic could erect a huge screen at their training ground so Ange can oversee the build up to matches; daily Zooms with his backroom staff would take a few clicks to organise; and during matches his main assistant could be permanently Zoomed on his SmartPhone to allow instructions to be passed instantaneously.
Of course, the Celtic Board would have to stump up for the higher-priced Zoom subscription that doesn’t cut out after 40 minutes – those last 5 minutes can be vital in any half.
You always have to look at the Risk/Reward profile for any innovation.
The Risks for Celtic are zero. Whatever Amiable Ange does or doesn’t do, the club will finish 2nd in the Premiership next season. Rangers will be out of sight above and the Also Rans will be in a similar position below.
As for Rewards, no need for expensive travel or digs; the Board doesn’t need to meet the manager in person; and no touchline clashes with SG at Rangers.
Oh and they can also terminate Ange by Zoom, which will minimise embarrassment when the inevitable becomes urgent.
Meantime, the other ten clubs in the Scottish Premiership will continue to do something that also begins with Z.
ZERO.
Time for Change.
