James Anderson may well have more financial acumen than anyone else involved at Board level in Scottish football.
However, his most important contribution will NOT be attracting more investment in Hearts.
What Mr Anderson needs to do is to mobilise the “Also Rans” ie every other club apart from Celtic and Rangers.
For 36 years, the other 40 clubs in the SPFL have failed to stop the Celtic and Rangers duopoly ruining Scotland’s National Sport.
The problems stem from the ludicrous decision taken by the clubs back in 1980 to allow the Old Firm to keep 100% of their home gate receipts. This instantly increased their revenue by around 70%, making their economic strength unchallengeable by the Also Rans.
This decision has been worth over £700 million to Celtic and Rangers at today’s prices, £700 million they have used to transform the other clubs into nonentities.
The three supposed main challengers to the duopoly – Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs – haven’t won the top league for an aggregate 168 years between them.
They are NOT challengers- they are supplicants at the altar of the Old Firms success.
James Anderson has to mobilise the supine Also Rans to ask for some of the money back.
Scottish Football Matters has suggested £20 million each per season reparations would be a sensible bill to deliver to Celtic and Rangers.
If they won’t pay the bill, both clubs should be expelled from the SPFL.
Perhaps some other country will provide a home for Celtic and Rangers – but it doesn’t really matter. With their expulsion, the Also Rans will have something good to look forward to – GENUINE COMPETITION.
James Anderson must show that he is not the kind of man who will kneel before the Old Firm. He owes it to Hearts – and the rest of the current Also Rans.
