Scottish football has a chance to reclaim the soul of the game as fans turn away from greedy elites in disgust?

The problem is that the “soul” of Scottish football was captured by our home-grown elite – Celtic and Rangers – in 1980.

That’s the year the two greedy Glasgow clubs managed to grab 100% of their home gate receipts for the first time.

In the intervening forty years, the Old Firm have enjoyed an aggregate £700 million financial windfall from their increased share of home gate receipts.

They have used that £700 million to crush any semblance of competition in the Premiership, allowing their duopoly to win the league title for 36 consecutive seasons.

There have been NINE different winners of England’s top league in the same period. Or, if you prefer a comparison with a nation with the same population as Scotland, feel free to consider the TEN different champions Norway’s top league has enjoyed in the last 36 seasons.

Anyway, it is now time for Celtic and Rangers to start repaying the £700 million, at the rate of £40 million per year between them.

Or they can go and find some other league in which to strut their stuff.

Those are the stark options that Chairs Cormack, Budge and Gordon – supported by the other club leaders – must put before the Old Firm right NOW.

There must be no restarting of the “in a row” farce that has wrecked Scottish football in the last four decades. Blue or Green, it is a poison that has sapped the spirit of the perennial Also Rans.

“In a row” must be killed off for good.

Time for Change.
