Some Potential Changes to Scottish Football Financial Arrangements.

I have already highlighted that 1980 was one of two pivotal years for Scottish football.

That was the year when Celtic and Rangers somehow persuaded the other clubs that home match gate receipts should be 100% retained by the home club.

This crazy move increased the Old Firms gate revenue by between 70 and 80%.

The other pivotal year was 1992; the year the new-style Champions League was launched.

The Champions League can deliver £30 to £40 Million per season to one or other of the Old Firm. From next season, that changes to both.

How can this financial imbalance be addressed.

Very simple.

The other clubs need to vote through the following:

* Each season, Celtic and Rangers will pay 40% of their home gate revenue -or £10 million, whichever is the lower figure – into a fund to be shared equally amongst the other ten Premiership clubs.

* Each season, Celtic and Rangers will pay 40% of their European tournament prize money – or £10 million, whichever is the lower figure – into a fund to be shared equally amongst the other ten Premiership clubs.

These new arrangements will deliver a minimum of £4 million per season per club to the current “also rans” in the Premiership.

The new funding will significantly strengthen the finances of the other ten clubs, at least six of which currently earn £2 million or less per season from home league match gate receipts.

Celtic and Rangers will bleat, but can be voted down – or even out – by the other clubs.

Time for Change.
