Applaud Hibs 3rd Place – But Put It In Perspective….

Hibs are likely to finish 3rd in the Scottish Premiership this season.

So best of the rest, the “also rans”, behind Rangers and Celtic.

Though Hibs haven’t actually won Scotland’s top league for 69 years, they deserve praise for improving their league position over the previous season.

However, it is surely sensible to look at Hibs feat in the context of their points deficit as compared to champions Rangers.

Hibs are currently 33 points behind Rangers.

So where would that points deficit have left Hibs in other European leagues?

Here’s a selection, a random pick.

Hibs would be:

England 22nd

Belgium 15th

France 17th

Germany 14th

Holland 12th

Italy 13th

So, at best, Hibs would be 12th, 33 points behind the league leaders/winners.

This highlights two aspects of Scottish football.

Firstly, the duopoly of Celtic and Rangers, dominant for 36 years, has created a yawning chasm between the Big Two and the “also rans”.

Secondly, the “best of rest” will never be able to bridge the gap between themselves and the Old Firm, within the current structure and with the current financial arrangements.

Time for Change.
